tafi allstars is a collaborative recording project between optimo music artists thomas lea clarke (mr tc) and conal blake (whilst) and members of the tafi cultural institute of tafi atome, ghana. after having previously visited tafi atome to take part in the music of the volta region study tours that are organised by tci in collaboration with green door studio, clarke and blake secured funding from creative scotland to travel back to tafi in november 2016 to record a mini-album of tracks that blend the rhythms and melodies of traditional borborbor and agbadza drumming forms and ewe songwriting with electronic instrumentation and dub recording techniques.

klasse wrecks label boss luca lozano and mr. ho team up for the second in their visions of rhythm series. following on from the smoked out, trip hop inspired musings on the last ep the duo get busy with trancey leanings, deep-beat and minimal meltdowns.

dubtraxx is new on the scene, as is their label rhythm n vibe, but don t let that lull you into a false sense of security this is seriously heavyweight gear. soundbwoy request is especially dangerous, working plenty of dub, reggae and jungle motifs into a rugged garage structure and sounding utterly ruff in the process. towards 99 is no slouch either, albeit on a slightly housier tip than the raucous a-side. the 2000 tribute mix of next millenium meanwhile sneaks out a few of the eerie tones you d expect to hear around the time that dubstep first started to emerge.

monumental house anthem alert! another classic jammer from 1992 lifted straight from the strictly vaults. this one s huge. phuture aka acid house pioneers spanky and dj pierre (with a little help from roy davis jr) turn in a driving, acidic monster in true wild pitch style. probably the only record that begins with a sinister voice saying this is cocaine speaking before diving head-long into one of the best anti-drug house records ever. absolutely brilliant. bubbling 303 basslines and cavernous handclaps combine with a funked out, dubbed out synth line that just doesn t stop. phuture will survive, and they weren t lying when they said that as this record (among too many others they had a hand in) still rock today. yep, still fresh. tried and tested, often imitated, never bettered. phuture are the originals. open up your eyes (and ears). this one s a tasty 2017 reissue and remaster, featuring all 4 mixes as per the original release way back when. essential stuff here. you simply need this one.

rawax prouldy welcomes rhythm of paradise to the family! it happened last autumn when our label head robert drewek was traveling to bari to play a gig with his friend nico lahs. he met this very symapthic & crazy guy and felt in love with the music he showed him. so here s the result - a trip back to the 90 s - enjoy!

octo champ releases his second ep of 2017, following up on not quite there yet, which received major exposure from thump and dj mag. this upfront four-track release is a selection of dance floor ready disco and house and sits boldly apart from a lot of other music within these genres. dj support so far from dan shake and titeknots amongst others. taking inspiration from the more exotic corners of the musical spectrum the ep leads with the upbeat make heaven and its conga rhythms, vocal hooks and electronic patterns. cmi is slower and moves further into the groove whilst lacuna is the ep s funkiest cut, featuring a killer bass hook, percussion, guitar chops, claps and more vocals to carry it along. closing with a second four to the four track diametric leads with an elastic, acoustic bassline, synth pads and you ve guessed it: more vocal hooks. octo champ is one-half of dj/promoter duo rigid disco, running parties and radio shows across both london and glasgow and booking rising stars such as tom blip, fyi chris, hector plimmer and the rye wax crew. octo champ has remixed soundway s flamingods and chpln as well as contributing to the cdr x dimensions sounds 2016 project. most recently, his music was picked up by let s go swimming who released the not quite there yet ep.

absolutely essential record right here - the underground solution aka the s man aka the legendary roger sanchez is a name that you should all be familiar with by now, and his 1990 anthem luv dancin is an nyc deep house benchmark. that s right, this originally came out in 1990. that s a heck of a long time ago. thing is, this record, when played at the right time will still cause maximum damage in the club. riffing on disco classic is it all over my face and with elements of the bottle interspersed with a deep, rolling garage bassline and dreamy keys and pads sanchez crafted a solid gold cut, a timeless piece of dance music that still inspires today and is often imitated yet obviously never bettered! the flipside cuts deep in my mind and afterthought are also sublime exercises in the deepness, the s man s trademark eerie pads, bleeps and dope drum programming evident throughout, making these tracks huge hits from nyc to sheffield and beyond! this whole ep is flawless and if you dig the deeper side of this stuff then you re in for a treat - now s your chance to bag a bonafide, hands down classic record! luv dancin has been skilfully remastered from all original master sources and fully licensed and reissued officially for 2017.

occassional duo pjotr g & dubiosity have become household prruk names within short time. a couple of months after the well received “a man is no island” ep a new submission to the ever extended prrukblk catalog was provided in the form of “savant”, a 4 track spanning work of staggering techno with the significant filmic elements that pjotr g and dubiosity cleverly incorporate into their hazy works of techno. whereas the a side is based on these elements, on the b side darker elements are introduced. “savant” is a ferm but uplifting techno record.

picture the scene: a dark basement with flickering strip lights, sweat dripping from the ceiling & down the walls, bodies crammed moving to the thud of house & disco colliding, vogue - poppers - vogue - poppers, a time when everything was raw, experimental and energetic, this is the underground.

first release on the label rhythm control barcelona, which is also the name of the record store owned by dj bruce lee. the a side comes with a track by phran featuring ivy barkakati titled -impulse-, old school flavored vocal house with a strong personality. this side is completed by an acidic remix by john barera. the b side is a track by phran called -yuka-, which samples cuban voices over minimal analog rhythms and an acid bass line. the remix is by a well-known dj from madrid, tr, a newcomer producing incredible tracks.

thomas schumacher is finally back on noir music with another outstanding 2-tracker. over the years me and thomas have become great friends as we click on so many levels and share the same taste in dark, melancholic and emotional music. i have been a big fan of thomas’ music for many years and i am still a great supporter of his productions today so obviously i am honored to release his music on my label again. on these 2 tracks thomas has recorded 2 authentic and raw tracks with a no holding back, zero bulls*** attitude. you can hear the “no formular” approach on both and i love that. we had an honest and creative back and forth a&r process on both tracks before and after testing them in the clubs and this has given both a unique and fresh techno sound. this is thomas schumacher’s natural rhythm.

dan curtin s name has long been associated with future looking techno, machine music oozing with soul and emotion. he has released on many seminal labels throughout his career and left an indelible mark on contemporary electronic music. alive / cascade is perhaps a lesser known entry into curtin s catalogue, released on strictly in 1994 and is almost the perfect synthesis of nyc deep house and detroit techno, a true slept on gem of a record. the music contained within the grooves of this record defy any sort of time frame, it s almost hard to believe it s over 20+ years old. a truly beautiful record, alive / cascade is a must for all electronic music lovers and will undoubtedly continue to be played and enjoyed for the next 20+ years ahead. astounding stuff and yet another example of the wide reaching ears and minds operating strictly rhythm during this golden period.

another cornerstone record from the mighty strictly rhythm catalogue, waterfalls / feel it is an essential example of the deeper, more melodic style of house that emanated from nyc / nj in the early to mid 90s. originally released in 1991 the ep features the production style of andrew rags richardson with some co-production assistance from one roger sanchez. it perfectly encapsulates the style of music that would be played at clubs like the loft, shelter, zanzibar and beyond, a more emotive and soulful strain of house that gives a respectful nod to it s disco roots. waterfalls / feel it has long been the toast of house aficionados and is most definitely a record that will still have people rushing the booth asking what s this? an evergreen slab of wax indeed. essential sounds for the heads.

spiros kaloumenos has been one of the key artists of planet rhythm at an earlier stage. this time he’s back with a completely recrafted style that perfectly fits the label’s current state of mind. adventurous techno with thumping beats and at times a little acidic touch. the greek artist comes up with a killer four track ep that goes from the sturdy beats of introvert shadow, through the acid tainted 101 reasons to the rave inspired anthem called de forme. we’re happy to welcome spiros back to planet rhythm.

“tracking happiness” is a lush piece of esoteric techno that spans over six minutes and showcases von grall’ s artful approach to contemporary eletronics.
“case history” is a percussion laden cut that delicately changes further on with slabs of fx while maintaining it’ s mystic atmosphere. “state of being violin” is a state of the art piece of techno music completed by deep percussion and moments of wild fx. “self portraits” serves as the closing track.
this cut showcases taints of experimental electronics and dystopian techno.

mike lundy was born and raised in nu‘unau, on the island of oahu in hawaii. from an early age, lundy s original compositions caught the coveted attention of herb ono, the legendary owner of honolulu s sounds of hawaii recording studio. in 1980, lundy recorded a solo lp entitled the rhythm of life. unfortunately, he spent so much money on production that nothing was left for promotion. it went nowhere upon release.

durian brothers album das macht modern, released on kontra-musik in 2014, remains one of the most sought after highlights in our catalogue. the mad scientists of salon des amateurs produced an eccentric masterpiece that can be described in a multitude of ways, straight dance music not being one of them. one of the brothers, stefan schwander, fills this gap with his solo project harmonious thelonious. inspired by american minimalist music and african rhythm patterns, the result is muscular and twangy like an old radboud mens record on steroids. moist and mechanical at the same time.

when armand van helden pronounced todd invented the game. the rest of us are just playing it he articulated a feeling that had existed in the house music community ever since todd terry became the toast of the dancefloor with a brash, brand new sound that combined the rhythms of house with the attitude of hip hop. those early productions, struck through with raw energy, low-fi production and heavily manipulated samples set the tone to come for new york house and in the process, propelled todd to one of the first internationally known dj/producers

planet rhythm usual yan cook teams up with fellow ukranian artist mays for a tough collaboration record named “old friend ep”. on the opening-track “fixed” the tone is being set for this being an utter dancefloor effort with the extended use of fx and modulation. “old friend” resumes in this fashion bringing a glitchy atmosphere of some kind together with matches chords and outlandish drum work. the b-side opens up with the futuristic tones of “coder” which is based around tough synth arpeggiators and ferocious kick drums. “tesla” continues down the road of futuristic techno with it’s strong and extended fx works and intrusive synthesizer sounds.

following rhythm büro’s debut release last year, the kiev-based label has returned with a successive rb002. in a similar vein to their first release, this release features vero and na nich as well as a welcome addition from an up-and-coming ukrainian producer, lobanov k. a2 finds a remix from the notable and much-applauded dj’s dj, eric cloutier. sonically, the record ranges from deeper, housey motifs and dubbed-out techno ventures on the a-side to electro-esque and slightly weirder break-beat expositions on the b-side.

talk about the legends of house and kenny dope gonzalez holds one of the undisputed seats in the gallery. since breaking out of brooklyn as new york house began to dominate the 1990s the dope man rose to the very top with masters at work, gaining a peerless reputation as beatmaker, producer and dj. originally brought to strictly rhythm as a teenager by todd terry, he became one of the key producers in forging the strictly sound through releases by the untouchables and total kaos, and his work with louie vega on the sole fusion and hardrive projects. back home at strictly with a fresh new production (for the first time since 1999), kenny teams up with another legend of house, roland clark (aka south st player) for talk dirty, a rumbustious, risque excursion that sees clark delivering one of his trademark monologues over kenny s perfect beats. it s a fitting sound for the 900 number the landmark nine hundredth single released on strictly rhythm

dj glc makes his debut with his first solo ep, inspired by 90 s deep house roots. gianluca, a dj & producer since 10 years in the business, offers a complete ep touching every kind of nuance of house music. “feel the rhythm” original mix is a dreamy concept, pads filtered take you into a trip, simoncino remix is a dance floor killer with straights pattern and magic atmosphere. “paradise house” is inspired by infamous italian deep house of the 90’s , vintage sounds selected and hardware used to make it. “move on!” is different view not in 4/4 but break patterns, samples and deep bass line. a complete view of actual house landscapes.

subonation of perjury is the latest in the series of heart wreching techno releases from dubiosity for planet rhythm. like always, this release is heavily concentrated on touching synths and growing melodies that might leave the listener in a euphoric gaze. it’s dubiosity’s signature to combine dark and intense techno rhythms with layers of melodic goodness. throughout the whole ep this style is present. elysian fields is the darkest cut of them all but also here a vivid choir comes through to mellow things down. pjotr g and dubiosity join forces for a remix of remy kruyer’s ho chi minh on the b2.

the seventh instalment in the rhythm nation series is by the uk producer isaac reuben. these jams are rough, raw and ready. they bear the bright-eyed and bushy-tailed signature of someone untarnished by exposure yet betray a complete vision and total control of the craft.
